Pros and cons of organic farming

On the occasion of earth day a group discussion held at the department of life science. Students discussed various points about organic farming. Organic farming, products are generally grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers and therefore are healthy. Since organic foods grow more slowly and naturally, it is believed a wider variety of vitamins and minerals can be found in organic foods. While the positive points were counted, ethical issues were also discussed by students. Since fewer foods are grown, organic farming increasing the cost of all (organic and non-organic) foods, thus further restricting poor people from purchasing quantity and variety of foods.

Students of M.Sc Microbiology and Biotechnology participated actively in the event and discussion was coordinated by Ms Reshu Sharma

    Environmental pollution

A scientific discussion was organized on environmental pollution under the direction of Dr. Alok Gupta, Head of the of Life Science. The major topic was the usage of polyethene and its degradation. Polyethene is routinely used to carry & to reserve the materials and therefore, decreasing the usage of polyethene is a major issue these days. Several ideas regarding the decrease of polyethene usage were talked about. Finally, it was inferred that the polyethene usage can only be decreased if its production is monitored at industrial level. The control at this level will limit the polyethene usage in cities & villages and hence, it will reduce the issue of its degradation.
